Martyrs Basilissa and Anastasia of Rome

In Rome by decree of Nero executed two followers of Christianity

During the reign of Emperor Nero in the capital of the empire, two women were executed, accused of belonging to the Christian community and the secret burial of executed co-religionists.

Vasilissa and Anastasia, inhabitants of Rome, adopted the new faith from the apostles Peter and Paul. During the period of persecution, they secretly took the bodies of dead Christians and provided them with a decent burial. The denunciation led to the arrest. Under torture – flogging, torn with iron hooks and fire – women, according to eyewitnesses, did not renounce their beliefs. After prolonged torture, they were beheaded.

In those years, the Roman authorities viewed Christianity as an illegal creed, and followers of the new religion were often persecuted. The exact date of the execution is not known, but the event refers to the reign of Nero (54-68).
