Agapit Markushevsky

In 1712 he was appointed Bishop of Barnabas, a minister from Moscow. Along the way, he had to spend 3 weeks in the Markushevsky Monastery. The rivers had not yet risen, but it was impossible to swim on them. During these 3 weeks, the bishop ordered to review the archives of the monastery.
make a description of him. The monastery was known for the icon of St. Nicholas and the miracles performed on the tomb of the founder — Agapit.

Where Agapit came from, how he became a monk, we do not know. We know that he spent several years in the Borisogleb monastery. In 1576, he fell ill and did not want to get out of bed. One day, Agapita had a vision. He saw the icon of St. Nicholas and heard the command to bring it to a certain place, on the river Markush and to establish a monastery there. The same
2 miracles occurred: an icon was found in the cell and Agapit recovered.

Taking the icon, the monk went on a long journey, and on the bank of Markusha he had the feeling that he had come where he needed to go. He built a chapel and began to spend his days in fasting and prayer. Although the saint came to a deserted place, it did not last long. Hearing about the image of a wonderful and wise old man, the people began to come for advice, prayer and help. Soon followers appeared and Agapit laid down a wooden church. In 1579, the St. Nicholas Church was consecrated, and after a while another one was built – the Annunciation Church.

But it wasn’t just the admirers who had Agapit. The inhabitants of the neighboring village were dissatisfied with the fact that a monastery was located on their lands. Their hatred grew as the monastery grew.

One day, Agapit went on business not a mill. He left on horseback, and by the evening of that day, the horse had returned without a rider. The worried brothers went in search. On the banks of the Uftyuga River, they noticed a strange thing. The Agapita Iron Trees swung on the water like the bark of a tree. And right below them, at the bottom of the river, was his body.

With sobs and prayers, the brothers carried the body of Agapit to the monastery and buried between the two temples. A chapel was built over the grave, and the faiths were placed on the dome.

In 1764 the monastery was closed and the relics of the saint were lost.
